The awards for Hollywood. The ceremonies as Oscar e Golden Globe they have also been the stage for several protests and boycotts, which have brought to the fore the problems of the film industry itself.
The Golden Globes, which takes place this Sunday (9), is the target of a series of boycotts that completely emptied the party. This year, there will be no audience, red carpet or even broadcast. As CNN Brasil said, the award is criticized for its lack of diversity among the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), an association that chooses the nominees and the winners.
But other editions were also the target of demonstrations for thorny issues such as the culture of harassment, US foreign policy and even the ban on musical performances.
Check out some of the protests that marked the history of the awards below:
Marlon Brando refuses the Oscar for Best Actor in 1972, in protest against the treatment given to American Indians
One of the first and most famous awards boycotts occurred when Brando won the award for his unforgettable role in “The Godfather.” The actor sent in his place Native American activist Shasheen Littlefeather, who took the stage, refused the statuette and read a manifesto against the film industry’s treatment of Native Americans.
Michael Moore speaks against the Iraq War at the Oscar, when receiving the award for Best Documentary in 2003
Upon winning the statuette for “Shooting Columbine”, the filmmaker delivered a speech as critical as his film. Moore cited that the country was living in a “fictional time” and spoke out against the Iraq War and then-President George W. Bush. The protest received both boos and applause, and the broadcast cut Moore’s speech to the musical score.
Barred from performing at the ceremony, Jorge Drexler sings after receiving the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2005
Although nominated for “Al otrolado del río”, the theme song for “Diários de Motocicleta”, the Uruguayan composer could not perform at the ceremony, as is traditional. The production chose to invite actor Antonio Banderas and guitarist Carlos Santana to interpret the song, under the argument that they are better known artists. Drexler responded with class: when he took the Oscar, he sang the song in chapel rather than giving a speech.
2008 Golden Globe Ceremony Canceled by Threatened Protest Amid Writers Strike
Between 2007 and 2008, the Writers Union of America promoted a total stoppage of its activities, demanding better payouts. Announced normally, the 2008 Globe ended up backing down on the event, fearing demonstrations at the ceremony. The winners were eventually announced at a press conference broadcast by the NBC television channel.
#OscarSoWhite campaign in 2016 features black celebrity boycotts of the ceremony
The revelation of the 2016 Oscar nominees sparked a series of criticisms for lack of diversity: of the 20 nominees in the acting categories, all were white. Black celebrities joined the #OscarSoWhite (“Too White Oscar”) movement, which included a boycott of the ceremony. Names like Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith did not attend the awards.
Asghar Farhadi does not receive the Oscar for Best Foreign Film of 2017, in a demonstration against Donald Trump’s Arab immigrant veto
In January 2017, then US President Donald Trump published a decree banning the entry of citizens from Muslim countries into the country. When the Iranian feature film “The Apartment” was announced as the winner, two Iranian scientists residing in the US read a letter from the filmmaker, who refused to participate in the event in solidarity with Arab citizens. In the text, Farhadi criticized American xenophobia, and highlighted the power of cinema to unite cultures.
Actresses wear black dresses at the 2018 Golden Globes to call attention to sexual abuse in Hollywood
Amidst the emergence of the Time’s Up movement, which protested against the culture of sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry, the Golden Globe saw a kind of different dress code. Virtually the entire red carpet was wearing black, a color chosen by actresses like Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Emma Watson to draw attention to the cause.
