Putin: ‘Russia will not be encircled like the Soviet Union’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that no Iron Curtain would fall on the Russian economy, despite Western sanctions, because Moscow would not encircle itself, as the Soviet Union did.

Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have led Russia, one of the world’s largest producers of natural resources, to shrink its economy significantly since the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

Asked about agreements with partners such as China and Russia in the midst of “closing” the Russian economy, Putin said the country’s economy would remain open.

“We will not have a closed economy,” he assured young businessmen ahead of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

“We did not have a closed economy – or rather, we had, during the Soviet era, when we cut ourselves off, creating the so-called Iron Curtain. We created it with our own hands. We will not make the same mistake again, our economy will remain open.” he added.

Putin had said in 2005 that the collapse of the USSR was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century because millions of Russians were plunged into poverty and Russia itself was facing disintegration.

Following the withdrawal of major US and European companies and investors from Russia, Moscow says it will turn its back on the West and focus on developing its own domestic industry while intensifying cooperation with China, India and other powers. in the Middle East.

“A country like Russia can not be limited,” Putin said.
