Queiroga appeals to the population for reinforcement against Covid; 69 million are in arrears

More than 69 million Brazilians failed to receive the first booster dose of vaccines against Covid-19. This Saturday (12), the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, made an appeal to the population, in a publication on Twitter, for joining the reinforcements against the disease.

“I also want to remind you that more than 69 million Brazilians did not take the first booster dose against Covid-19. Already 32.8 million people could have received the second booster dose against the disease, but have not yet been vaccinated,” said the minister.

“We know that vaccines were fundamental to controlling the health emergency caused by Covid-19. Therefore, I ask you to seek the vaccination rooms. The Ministry of Health also makes available the new antivirals that have been important to treat a specific group of patients”, added Queiroga.

The number of new cases of Covid-19 in Brazil in the week ended on Saturday (12) rose 134% compared to the previous seven days, according to data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass).

In Brazil, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Janssen and Coronavac vaccines are applied against Covid-19. The primary vaccination schedule is two doses for most immunizers. The application of booster doses is based on the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, considering aspects such as age and health condition.

The protection against Covid-19 provided by vaccines tends to decrease over time. Therefore, booster doses are necessary to restore immunity against the disease and reduce the risk of aggravation and death from the infection.

According to a survey of CNN Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Norte, Amazonas, São Paulo, Alagoas and the DF already apply the fifth dose against Covid-19.
