Britain intercepted and escorted four Russian bombers that approached its area of interest earlier Wednesday, a Royal Air Force spokesman said.
“Typhoon fighters on high alert took off from Royal Air Force Lossiemouth Air Base, backed by a Voyager aircraft that took off from Royal Air Force Brize Norton Air Base, to intercept an unidentified U.S. Air Force reconnaissance “We then intercepted and escorted four Russian Bear aircraft,” the spokesman said in an e-mailed statement.
Bear aircraft is the NATO code name for Russian Tu-95 and Tu-142 aircraft.
The aircraft did not enter British airspace.
