Rain affects 107 municipalities and leaves at least 10 dead in RS

A balance released by the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul in the early afternoon of this Wednesday (1st) reveals that 107 cities in Rio Grande do Sul were hit by the heavy rains that have been affecting the state since Monday (29th). At least ten deaths have been confirmed. Another 11 people are injured.

In total, 19,110 people were affected in Rio Grande do Sul by events such as floods, landslides, river overflows and landslides. The latest balance shows that 3,393 individuals are homeless and 1,072 are in shelters.

Of the total of ten deaths, two occurred in Paverama and two in Salvador do Sul. The other municipalities that recorded fatal victims were Pântano Grande, Itaara, Encantado, Segredo, Santa Maria and Santa Cruz do Sul.

There are still 21 people missing, eight in Candelária, six in Encantado, four in Roca Sales, two in São Vendelino and one in Passa Sete.

The places most affected by the storms are the central region of the state and the Caí and Taquari valleys. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), until Tuesday (30), the city of Santa Maria, in the central region, had recorded an accumulated volume of 215.4 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. In Bento Gonçalves, in Serra Gaúcha, the accumulated amount was 182.6 millimeters.

Rio Grande do Sul and part of Santa Catarina are still on storm danger alert until tomorrow, says Inmet.

The Rio Grande do Sul government created a crisis office to monitor the situation in the state. According to the agency, a preliminary survey shows that the damage caused by the rain in Rio Grande do Sul is estimated at approximately R$100 million.

On Tuesday, Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) made a post on a social network asking the federal government to assist the state in rescuing victims. Shortly afterwards, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) responded that “whatever is necessary, the federal government will join the efforts of the state government and city halls to get us through and overcome this difficult moment, reflections of climate change that affect the planet”.

In the last few hours, the Brazilian Air Force and the Army, in addition to the civil defenses of several states, sent aircraft to Rio Grande do Sul to assist in rescue operations.
