Rain decreases, but continues at least until Sunday (5) in Rio Grande do Sul

The rains that punish Rio Grande do Sul are expected to continue at least until Sunday (5), but in lesser volume. The state government's latest report reported that 37 people died and another 74 were missing due to the storms that have hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the week. Around 235 municipalities were affected.

According to Climatempo, in the last 24 hours, rainfall in the north and northeast of the state was high, exceeding 200 millimeters in the Passo Fundo basin. The persistence of rain directly affects river levels, which continue to rise.

Levels are above flood levels in the Caí river basins, in São Sebastião and Montenegro; Taquari, from Muçum, Estrela to Taquari; Jacuí, between Dona Francisca and Eldorado do Sul; Sinos, from Taquara to São Leopoldo and Nova Santa Rita; Gravataí, from Gravataí to Canoas.

In Porto Alegre, the Guaíba River has reached historic levels since 1941 and could reach 5 meters this Friday afternoon (3). The elevation was so great that the gauges used to report the river level broke down and stopped working.

The federal government closes the bridges that cross the river after the water volume exceeds 4.6 meters above the normal level. The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) registered 53 sections of federal highways with total or partial closure throughout the state of Rio Grande do Sul due to the storms.

No respite

This Friday (3), intense and constant rains continue throughout Rio Grande do Sul, with the flow of moisture coming from the North of the country. According to Climatempo, by the end of the day, between 50 and 130 millimeters had accumulated, with the possibility of reaching 150 millimeters in the north of Rio Grande do Sul and in the regions bordering Santa Catarina.

The west, Missões region and central part of the state, may also record light and occasionally moderate rain. However, in almost all of Rio Grande do Sul, wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are forecast throughout the day.

These rains continue on Saturday (4) over part of the north, center and metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Heavy and persistent rain is forecast in the northwest, north and Serra Gaúcha, with accumulations of between 50 and 100 mm/day. In the south of the state the forecast is light to moderate rain.

On Sunday, there are still forecasts of heavy to moderate rain in the regions of Missões, the center, valleys, metropolitan Porto Alegre, and the north coast, with accumulations of between 15 and 35 millimeters.
