Rain in Ipatinga: Cemaden warns of high risk of landslides in the region

The city of Ipatinga, in the Vale do Aço region, in Minas Gerais, is on alert for the high risk of landslides and possible falls of barriers this Tuesday (14). The statement was issued by Cemaden (National Center for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts).

Last Sunday (12), the municipality was hit by heavy rains that left 10 people dead. The most affected neighborhoods were Bethânia, where it rained 204mm, Canaã, Vila Celeste, Veneza, Jardim Panorama, Esperança, Taúbas and Forquilha.

Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) and the State Civil Defense have already warned of the possibility of more rain in the region in the coming days. According to Inmet, up to 100mm/day and winds of up to 100 km/h are expected, with a chance of falling trees, flooding and electrical discharges.

For Cemaden, the high volume accumulated over the last 48 hours, added to the forecast rain, reinforces the warning of high geological risk.

A survey by Ipatinga Civil Defense showed that approximately 85 thousand residents were affected. According to city hall figures, 150 people are homeless and another 37 are homeless in the city.

Response to rain

The contingency plan mobilized several departments of Ipatinga City Hall, the state government, Civil Defense, Civil Defense Operations Center (CEDEC), Military Police, Fire Department and other bodies.

The action has a workforce of approximately 500 people and around 80 machines and equipment, including trucks, loaders and backhoes.

Emergency situation

The city of Ipatinga declared an emergency due to the rains. The decree authorizes emergency measures, such as mobilization of bodies, hiring of personnel and acquisition of resources for assistance. The measure is valid for 180 days and can be extended.
