The recovery of the road network in Rio Grande do Sul should cost around R$2.5 billion, according to estimates made by authorities in Rio Grande do Sul and the federal government.
Around R$1.2 billion has already been released as extraordinary credit through a provisional measure signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on Saturday (11).
This amount will be allocated to federal highways that cross the state, mainly BR-116, BR-290 and BR-470.
According to reports made to CNN by members of the situation room set up at Palácio do Planalto, the government of Rio Grande do Sul estimates an expenditure of over R$1 billion on state roads.
Another R$300 million, in a preliminary account, should come from concessionaires that manage stretches under private management. In this case, companies make the necessary investments to restore the roads and then request economic-financial rebalancing of their contracts.
A CNN obtained the complete list of works that will be carried out by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit), an agency linked to the Ministry of Transport, based on the extraordinary credit released by the MP.
In total, 66 interventions are planned in the federal network. The biggest of them is to repair the collapse of barriers on the BR-158 road in the municipalities of Santa Maria and Itaara, completely obstructing traffic.
It will be necessary to create retaining walls along the embankments and sprayed concrete on the rest of the barrier, including “soil reinforcement with tie rod clamps and downstream retaining walls”, according to the Ministry of Transport’s description.
Another relevant work will take place on BR-470, in Bento Gonçalves, where the runway was completely destroyed in several places. On the same highway, there are problems of equal severity in Veranópolis and resources have already been guaranteed to carry out the work.
