Read Charles III’s speech on being officially proclaimed king in full

King Charles III made his declaration at St James’ Palace during the official ceremony that proclaimed him king.

He paid tribute to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and spoke of the “great heritage and the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty which have now passed to me.”

Charles III immediately became king after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, this Thursday (8th). However, the official proclamation of the accession took place only this Saturday morning (10) at a ceremony of the Accession Council at St. James in London. He will continue with his name, as will his mother, and will be King Charles III.

Read his speech in full:

My lords, ladies and gentlemen.

It is my most painful duty to announce to you the death of my beloved Mother, the Queen.

I know how much you, the entire Nation – and I think I can say the entire world – sympathizes with me for the irreparable loss we all suffer. It is the greatest comfort to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my sister and brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support must be extended to our entire family in our loss.

To all of us as a family, to this kingdom and to the larger family of nations of which it is a part, my Mother set an example of lifelong love and selfless service.

My mother’s reign was unparalleled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even when we suffer, we give thanks for this more faithful life.

I am deeply aware of this great heritage and of the duties and weighty responsibilities of the Sovereignty that have now passed to me. In assuming these responsibilities, I will strive to follow the inspiring example set before me in upholding constitutional government and pursuing the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these Islands and the Commonwealth Kingdoms and Territories throughout the world.

In this purpose, I know that I will be sustained by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose Sovereign I am called to be, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the council of their elected parliaments. In all of this, I am deeply encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.

I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of handing over hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, to My Government for the benefit of all, in exchange for the Sovereign Grant, which supports My official functions as Head of State and Head of the Nation.

And in carrying out the heavy task entrusted to me and to which I now dedicate the rest of my life, I ask for the guidance and help of Almighty God.
