Recording of Princess Diana Reveals Charles Was Disappointed to Have a Son, Not a Daughter

New audio has been released of Princess Diana talking about how Prince Charles — now King Charles III — was disappointed that they had a boy, not a girl, when Prince Harry was born.

The Princess recorded a series of audiotapes in the 1990s and secretly gave them to author Andrew Morton before her death in a high-speed car accident in 1997. Diana.

Part of the audio, which totals seven hours, is being heard for the first time before, preceding a documentary that will be released next year called “Diana: The Rest of Her Story” (Diana: the rest of her story, in free translation).

ABC’s Good Morning America has listened exclusively to the tapes in which Diana says her husband wouldn’t even speak to her stepmother Raine Spencer.

“Because at Harry’s christening, Charles went up to Mum and said, ‘You know, we were so disappointed, we thought it was going to be a girl,’” she said.

“And mom ‘cracked his head’ and said, ‘You should realize how lucky you are to have a ‘normal kid,”” he said.

Diana further stated that since that day “he shuts down, and that’s what he does when someone talks back to him”.

Troubled relationship with stepmother

In the newly released recordings, the princess also talks about the troubled relationship she had with her stepmother.

“And I said, ‘I hate you so much. If you only knew how much we all hate you for what you’ve done. You’ve ruined the house. You spent daddy’s money.’ I said everything I could.”

Diana also says she remembers Raine Spencer reacting, saying she “had no idea how much pain her mother put her father through”.

The princess replied, “Pain, Raine? That’s a word you don’t even know how to relate to. In my work and role, I see people suffer like you’ve never seen. And you call that pain? I said, you have a lot to learn.”

“I remember really going down her throat,” he added.

The princess’s biographer, Andrew Morton, told ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday that there is a real “poignancy” in hearing her voice and her views firsthand on the monarchy.

“She never thought for a second that Camilla would become queen, so we have a very different perspective on how the story unfolds,” Morton said.

When asked if he would release more audios, Morton remarked: “There is global interest, but we will have to see what happens.”
