The attempts to frauds in communities and social networking sites increased by 67% in Brazil in the second quarter of 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. Credit cards and gift cards are the main targets of scammers who carry out thefts and fraudulent charges on these channels.
The data are from a survey carried out by TransUnion, based on digital transactions from 40,000 websites and applications. In the country, attempts at digital fraud increased by 20% in the period.
According to the survey, about three out of 10 Brazilians (27%) indicated that they were the target of digital fraud in the last three months, a number slightly higher than that recorded in the first quarter of 2022. Because of the fear of scams, 85% indicated concern about sharing their personal information, mainly due to privacy concerns (74%) and fear of having their identity stolen (72%).
For Alexandre dos Reis, solutions manager at TransUnion, the numbers reveal the need for companies to think of solutions to increase customer confidence and prevent fraud attempts.
“We can see that people are increasingly concerned about their privacy and the protection of their data and identity theft, so industries are investing more and more in security solutions, such as the use of simplified technology and prevention solutions. in several layers”, says Reis.
Despite the rate in relationship applications, the other sectors of the survey recorded a drop in fraud attempts in digital media: scams in the games area dropped by 88%, retail recorded a drop of 48% and travel and the like decreased by 45%. In financial services, the registered value was -19%, telecommunications was -5% and the logistics field registered -4%.
Worldwide, the most frequent fraud attempts were recorded in the insurance sector, which saw an increase of 159%. In this sector, the most common type of scam is related to personal benefit, with the objective of receiving certification, lower rates or better contract conditions. But despite considerable scale at insurers, the analysis noted that fraud declined by 14% globally.
