The arrest of influencer and lawyer Deolane Bezerra in the Buíque Women’s Penal Colony, in the interior of Pernambuco, recalled the case of the “Cannibals of Garanhuns”, discovered in 2012. Two women involved in the crime are serving their sentences in the same place where Deolane is being held.
Isabel Cristina Torreão Pires, Bruna Cristina Oliveira Da Silva and Jorge Beltrão Negromonte da Silveira became known throughout the country for dismembering and using parts of their victims’ bodies to prepare pies and coxinha dishes.
According to the Executive Secretariat for Reintegration, the trio continues to serve their sentences in closed regime. Isabel and Bruna are in custody at the Buíque Women’s Penal Colony, while Jorge Beltrão is imprisoned at the Barreto Campelo Penitentiary in Itamaracá.
In November 2014, after more than twenty hours of trial, the trio was convicted of the murder, dismemberment, concealment of a corpse and the practice of cannibalism against the teenager Jéssica Camila, aged 17. Those involved in the crime were sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.
In 2018, the defendants, who became known as the “Cannibals of Garanhuns”, were tried for the murders of Alexandra Falcão da Silva and Gisele Helena da Silva. In a jury trial, Jorge Beltrão and Bruna Cristina received sentences of 71 years in prison, while Isabel was sentenced to 68 years.
According to the Public Prosecutor in the case, André Rabelo, the crimes were discovered in 2012. One of the focuses of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Pernambuco was to dismiss any allegation that the defendants had some type of mental disorder.
In addition to selling and consuming the victims’ flesh, the three were part of a sect called the Cartel, which advocated the purification of the world and the reduction of the population.
Overcrowding
After having her house arrest revoked, influencer and lawyer Deolane Bezerra was sent to the Buíque Women’s Penal Colony, in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, 280 km from Recife.
In addition to the businesswoman, the prison houses 264 inmates – however, the prison unit only has capacity for 107 women and is overcrowded, according to the Pernambuco Prison Police Union.
Despite the overcrowding, CNN the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization of Pernambuco (SEAP/PE) explained that Deolane is in a private cell.
