Repeat elections in half of Berlin due to widespread irregularities

Repeat voting in the federal elections in six of the twelve districts of Berlin is being recommended by the Federal Election Commission, due to widespread irregularities found during the process.

We are talking about a “complete systemic failure of the electoral organization”, said the Chairman of the Commission Georg Till, speaking to the competent committee of the Federal Parliament and added: “What else must happen to declare the process irregular and decide that the elections must be to be repeated? ”

In the elections of September 26, 2021, extensive problems were identified during the electoral process, with missing or incorrectly printed ballots, with long delays in the process and with many polling stations closed. The day after the elections, the head of the Electoral Commission, Petra Michaelis, resigned.

Mr Till also noted that the scale of the problems was such that even the distribution of seats in the Bundestag could not be affected.

The final decision on whether or not to repeat the elections in these regions will be taken by Parliament, with the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) already calling for a repeat of the elections throughout the state of Berlin.
