Representative from Germany comes to Brazil to resume transfers to the Amazon Fund

The Secretary of State and Special Representative for International Climate Policy of Germany, Jennifer Morgan, will be in Brasília next Thursday (8).

THE CNN found out that the main objective of the visit is to align the details for the resumption of financial transfers to the Amazon Fund. On the agenda are meetings with representatives of the Central Bank, Itamaraty and the transition team of the federal government responsible for the area of ​​the environment.

Help from the European country to finance projects to protect the Amazon Forest was suspended in 2019, amid a clash with President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) due to the advance in deforestation in the region.

At the time, Germany suspended the transfer of 35 million dollars to the Fund.

In early November, shortly after the results of the Brazilian elections, representatives of the German government announced that the amount would be unlocked in 2022. This should happen after next week’s meetings, which provide for the signing of new agreements between the parties.

In addition to unblocking the amount frozen three years ago, new contributions to the Amazon Fund should be announced by Germany in the first days of January, during the German president’s visit to Brazil. Frank-Walter Steinmeier confirmed participation in the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The next day, he will visit the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), in Manaus, Amazonas.

Norway

Norway, the main financier of the Amazon Fund, also confirmed that it will resume the release of funds for projects in the northern region of Brazil. The information was reinforced to the president elected by the minister of the Environment of the Scandinavian country, Jonas Gahr Store, during the COP-27, in Egypt.

At the meeting, one of the commitments assumed by the Brazilian representatives was the reactivation of the committees responsible for managing the Fund.
