Revelation that Russian hackers tried to infiltrate NATO networks

A report by Google’s Threat Analysis Group released today reveals that Russian hackers recently attempted to break into its networks NATO and the armed forces of some Eastern European countries. The report does not specify which armed forces were targeted by the “e-fishing campaigns” launched by the Russian-based group Coldriver or Callisto.

The attack was carried out using new Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, therefore, its success rate is unknownaccording to the report.

Russia has been accused of various cyber-attacks against Western targets in recent years, but has systematically denied the allegations.

In 2019, cybersecurity firm F-Secure Labs identified the Callisto team as an unidentified threat posed by gathering information on foreign and security policy in Europe.

The team of hackers also attacked a NATO Center of Excellence, according to the report, without further details, as broadcast by Reuters and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

In a statement, NATO said, without elaborating on Google’s Threat Analysis Group report: “We detect malicious e-activity on a daily basis.”

“NATO Centers of Excellence cooperate with the Alliance, but are not in themselves part of NATO. “We are in contact with them about this case”, it is clarified in the announcement.
