Ricardo Nunes says he won’t back down from firing unvaccinated servers

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), declared at a press conference this Friday morning (5) that he “will not back down” from continuing to fire unvaccinated servers against Covid-19.

The statement comes after an ordinance, published by the Ministry of Labor on November 1st, which prohibits companies from requiring proof of immunization “in the act of hiring or maintaining the worker’s job.”

According to Nunes, he will only “obey” the ministerial order if a court decision forces him to do so.

Before the ordinance, the City of São Paulo had fired at least three commissioned employees who had refused to take any vaccine against Covid-19.

The original decree giving this prerogative dates back to August. According to him, public servants and employees of the Direct Administration, Municipalities and Foundations should be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

If this does not occur, without just cause, it will be characterized as a disciplinary offense, punishable by penalty. According to the decree, the Municipal Comptroller General will be responsible for monitoring civil servants who do not get vaccinated, as well as adopting the legal and regulatory measures appropriate to the case in question.

This week, the presentation of the vaccine passport or official certificate that proves the immunization became mandatory for any server to have access to the Matarazzo Building, the headquarters of the City Hall.
