Richard Gere almost turned down “Pretty Woman,” but Julia Roberts convinced him

The actor Richard Gere 75, said that Almost Turned Down the Role as Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman” but changed his mind after meeting Julia Roberts 57, her romantic comedy partner.

“Initially, I didn’t understand. There was no character. So I read [o roteiro] and said, ‘It’s not for me. For me, it’s a man in a suit who is there in the film’. I wouldn’t mind seeing the movie, but I don’t see myself doing it,” he recalled during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.

It was the film’s director, Garry Marshall, who asked Gere to at least meet with Julia Roberts, who had already accepted the role of Vivian, before turning down the role. Less than an hour after meeting the actress, Marshall called Gere and he had already changed his mind.

“I said, ‘She’s adorable. She’s great.’ And while I was talking to him, she took a post-it from my desk and wrote something on it,” the actor said of meeting Roberts. “Then she handed it to me and it said, ‘Please say yes.’ How can you say no to that?”

“Pretty Woman” became a classic, but not without being rewritten a few times, according to Gere. During filming, he tried to develop his character to become more complex.

“We ended up really trying to find a character there that made sense within the structure and essence of what that story was. To make it sincere, to make it charming, fun, sexy, you know? And we all love each other. Great confidence, we had a lot of fun, and we had no idea it would turn out what it would turn out to be,” he explained.
