Rio de Janeiro City Hall demolishes 20 irregular properties in the city

The Municipal Public Order Secretariat (Seop) of Rio de Janeiro, together with the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco) carried out today (26) a demolition operation of 20 irregular buildings in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the city hall, among the properties there was a gym, grocery stores, a fishmonger and a boat maintenance shop.

The buildings were located in the Terreirão region, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, west of the city – an area that is “strongly influenced by organized crime”, according to a statement.

“Gaeco/MPRJ is fully aware that the irregular construction of properties is one of the militia’s main sources of income. Actions like today’s are extremely important to suffocate them financially,” said prosecutor Michel Zoucas.

Also according to the city hall, the buildings did not have any type of authorization and clandestine connections of water and electricity were identified. The properties had been notified last year.

“The City Hall of Rio has as a premise, in the actions to combat irregular constructions, the preservation of people’s lives and the resumption of public order in the city”, said the secretary of Public Order, Brenno Carnevale.
