Rio de Janeiro firefighters extinguish more than a thousand forest fires in three days

The Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro has already extinguished more than a thousand forest fires throughout the state since the creation of the Crisis Management Office, last Thursday (12).

Of the 1,199 outbreaks recorded in the last three days, 1,162 have already been eliminated by teams. As of Sunday night (15), 29 incidents remain underway in different regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Only today, the firefighters put out 76 new outbreaks of fire in vegetation.

Since the beginning of 2024, the state of Rio de Janeiro has already registered more than 16,500 forest fires, also according to the RJ Fire Department.

The number represents an increase of more than 95% in occurrences compared to the same period last year, according to Colonel Tarciso Salles, Secretary of State for Civil Defense and general commander of the corporation.

Due to the fires, all 40 conservation parks in the state were closed. The provisional measure was announced by the Secretary of State for Environment and Sustainability of Rio de Janeiro.

On Monday (16), Castro has a meeting scheduled with the crisis cabinet created to speed up the control of forest fires.
