Rio de Janeiro will host the summit of heads of state of the G20 countries in November 2024, the Guanabara Palace informed this Tuesday (9), after a request presented by the government of Rio de Janeiro to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the beginning of the year.
“It’s official! RJ will host the G20 Heads of State Summit next year. The 20 largest world economic powers will be gathered and another 10 nations will be invited, totaling 30”, said Governor Cláudio Castro on his Twitter account.
Brazil will receive the rotating presidency of the G20 in December this year. The group is formed by Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and by the European Union (EU).
The holding of the summit will mark a return of major events to Rio de Janeiro, which hosted the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2014 World Cup final. For the governor, the meeting will be a historic milestone.
“All of this is being possible thanks to the efforts and efforts we are making to promote Rio de Janeiro to the world. This meeting is a milestone in our history,” she said.
The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, thanked President Lula for the decision to hold the event in Rio de Janeiro. “We are back! Thanks @LulaOficial! Rio!” he wrote on Twitter.
