Rio requests extension of the presence of the National Security Force

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, formally requested the federal government to extend the stay of the National Public Security Force (FNSP) in the state to patrol federal highways.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security said it received the request this Thursday (28), the last working day before the end of the planned security reinforcement period. The request is under analysis. According to the ministry, the Rio de Janeiro government did not set a deadline for action.

The information was released by Agência Brasil and confirmed by CNN .

“Governor Cláudio Castro requested, through an official letter, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to extend the stay of the National Force in Rio de Janeiro. The support of the Law and Order Guarantee (GLO) for the State police, which would end on March 31st, is essential to strengthen patrolling on federal highways”, said the Government of RJ in a note.

Around 300 National Force agents have reinforced security in Rio de Janeiro since October 2023, by order of the then Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino. In addition to the agents and 50 vehicles, the ministry authorized the deployment of 270 federal highway police officers, who patrol highways, to assist local security forces.

The reinforcement's initial period of stay would last until January 2024. However, at the end of January, at Castro's request, Dino extended the agents' presence for another 60 days.

The National Force's staff is made up of firefighters, civil police officers, military personnel and experts. The objective of the force is to contribute to the preservation of public order, the security of people and property and to act in emergencies and public calamities.

The priority of the action in Rio de Janeiro is the patrolling of the state's main highways, acting mainly to block routes used to transport cargo, stolen vehicles, drugs and weapons.
