The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro launched, this Tuesday (19), an operation that aims to combat piracy on the internet. At least one person has already been arrested.
The police’s targets are websites that, upon payment of a monthly fee, offer access to streaming services and pay-TV through illegal means.
“According to the investigations, a criminal organization branched out by several municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro is responsible for ostensibly attracting customers on internet sites,” Civil said in a statement.
The police say that the sites have more than 46 million hits a year and cause losses of more than R$100 million for copyright infringement.
In total, 13 search and seizure warrants were carried out in the cities of Duque de Caxias, Magé, Cabo Frio and in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
“The present work is of extreme importance, since the damages caused to the companies that hold the copyright are inevitably absorbed by the consumer who pays for the service on a regular basis”, alleges the Police.
