Rio de Janeiro City Hall implemented new traffic rules for Avenida Brasil, one of the most important expressways in the city. The new model was announced on April 11th and implemented this Tuesday (23rd), on the São Jorge state holiday. Today (24), therefore, is the first business day under the new rule.
The main change is the end of the exclusive selective lane for buses and taxis on weekends and holidays, and between 10am and 4pm and between 8pm and 5am during the week. Known as the selective lane, it is next to the lane designated for BRT public transport.
On these specific days and times, passenger vehicles will be authorized to circulate in the taxi and bus lanes. Trucks cannot access the selective section at any time, and must continue to use exclusively the two lanes on the right in the central lane.
How Avenida Brasil works:
Lane to the left of the gutter
- Every day, 24 hours a day: exclusively for BRT. Maximum speed limited to 60 km/h, reduced to 40 km/h in all seasons.
Lane to the right of the gutter
- Weekdays, from 5am to 10am, and from 4pm to 8pm: exclusive for conventional and highway buses, taxis and service vehicles (when in operation). Maximum speed limited to 60 km/h, reduced to 40 km/h in all seasons.
- Weekdays, from 10 am to 4 pm, and from 8 pm to 5 am, weekends and holidays: all vehicles are permitted, except trucks. Maximum speed limited to 60 km/h, reduced to 40 km/h in all seasons.
Two lanes to the right of the center lane
- Every day, 24 hours a day: all vehicles are allowed to circulate. Maximum speed of 80 km/h.

On the days and times permitted for the circulation of passenger vehicles on the Avenida's bus lanes, drivers need to pay attention to the speed limit, which will remain at 60 km/h, with a reduction to 40 km/h in places close to stations.
The two lanes to the right of the central lane, where all vehicles are allowed to circulate 24 hours a day, continue at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
The selective lane is 14.4 kilometers long, between Trevo das Margaridas (Rodovia Presidente Dutra) and Caju (Viaduto da Treliça). The BRT lane remains exclusive to articulated vehicles at all times.
