Robert Lewandowski named FIFA World Player of the Year for the second time

Polish Robert Lewandowski was named the best football player in the world by FIFA on Monday (17). It is the second time that the Bayern Munich striker, from Germany, has won the award.

Alexia Putellas, a Barcelona athlete, was named best player. She is the first Spanish woman to win the award.

The broadcast was carried out without an audience, in the city of Zurich, Switzerland.

FIFA took into account the period from 8 October 2020 to 7 August 2021 to determine the winners.

The best player and player awards are defined by an international jury composed, respectively, of the current coaches of all women’s/men’s national teams (one per team), the current captains of all women’s/men’s national teams (one per team) , a specialist journalist from each territory represented by a national team and fans registered on FIFA.com.

In 2021, Lewandowski broke the record for most goals scored in a Bundesliga season.

The Egyptian Mohamed Salah completes the top 3 in the dispute for the FIFA award. Despite Liverpool not winning titles last season, the right winger excelled this season and was the first Reds player to score more than 20 goals in three consecutive Premier League seasons.

The Brazilian Marta featured in the women’s team of the year. Interestingly, none of the three finalists for the individual award were in this ideal FIFA team.

The Brazilian naturalized Italian Jorginho was elected to the ideal men’s team. Messi, Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo were chosen for the best team of the season – which did not include Mohamed Salah.

The winner of the Puskas Award for the most beautiful goal was Erik Lamela. In the speech, he said that he trains a lot of shots outside the area and one of the skills that the player has to develop is to choose the best shot for each situation in the game.

At the ceremony, there was also FIFA fair-play, an award that was given to the Danish national team for the rescue of Christian Eriksen, 29, during a game against Finland valid for the Eurocup, when he had a stroke. The head of the country’s medical department praised the team that attended to Eriksen and their union, saying it was a “clear gesture of fair play”.

Brazilian goalkeeper Júlio César presented an award to the fans. The fans of Denmark and Finland were the ones honored, also for the gestures in the match where Eriksen suffered the heart attack.

During the stoppage of the game, one part of the crowd shouted “Christian”, while the other completed with “Eriksen”.

In the speech, the former player said that football is made for fans and stressed the importance of their return to the stadiums.

Thomas Tuchel was named the best coach in the world. He led Chelsea in winning the last edition of the Champions League. The English club will compete in the Club World Cup in February, a competition that will feature Palmeiras.
