Roblox and music publishers settle $ 200 million copyright infringement lawsuit

In June, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) filed a $ 200 million lawsuit, accusing studio Roblox, which created the popular game of the same name, for allowing players to illegally use music, meaning copyright infringement. Roblox and NMPA today announced a settlement agreement that will allow NMPA members to negotiate their own licensing deals with the gaming platform. The financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed by the parties.

The deal follows a similar NMPA agreement with Twitch that was announced last week. That agreement does not give creators access to songs that they can stream. Instead, it defines a new copyright infringement notification mechanism that starts with a warning, not a punishment. In an email, Twitch informed users that the new process is softer for users who inadvertently streamed music that they did not have permission to use.
