Russia: After full investigation into fleet bombing next steps for grain deal

An official of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the next steps regarding the initiative to export grain from Black Sea ports abandoned by Moscow can only be determined after full investigation about Saturday’s attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet, Bloomberg reports.

In comments to reporters carried by the state-run Tass news agency, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko did not explicitly rule out a return to the grain deal, which Moscow said Saturday it was leaving “indefinitely”.

Any return must be preceded by a thorough investigation of Saturday’s drone strike against Russian ships in Sevastopol, annexed Crimea, said Rudenko. It was not clear from his comments who should conduct an investigation.

Russia’s defense ministry said earlier, without providing details, that Ukraine carried out the attack from Odesa, the center of the grain initiative, and that a civilian ship may have been involved. A Ukrainian presidential adviser rejected these claims.

Russia expects to contact Turkey and the United Nations soon about the grain deal, Rudenko said.
