The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, is considering voting in favor of banning the exchange of Russian prisoners of war in the hands of Ukrainian authorities with members of the Ukrainian Azov Order, according to the Duma’s official Telegram channel.
In this post, the fighters of the Azov Order are called “nationalist criminals”.
The Azov Battalion, formerly a volunteer battalion involving far-right elements and part of the Ukrainian National Guard since 2016, together with units of the country’s armed forces, has been defending Mariupol for 82 days against the Russian invasion, while the latter period has been limited to the colossal Azovstal steel plant, which is besieged by the Russians.
The Ukrainian authorities, led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, have said they are working to free all fighters from Azofstal, believing that they have fulfilled their duty of resistance to the invader and that their salvation is paramount.
