The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday that the attempt by Western countries to try to expropriate Russian assets violates the laws of these nations themselves and that the initiative damages the international financial system.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova says the offensive is a form of neocolonialism and classified the strategy as part of a hybrid war that she said the West is waging against Moscow.
Kremlin threatens retaliation against Western press
At that same press conference, Zakharova warned European Union countries that if the bloc imposes restrictions on Russian media, the Kremlin will respond with a harsh and painful change for Western reporters.
On May 6, the vice-president of the European Commission, Vera Jourova, stated, according to Bloomberg, that the bloc would impose sanctions on the Voice of Europe website, accused of spreading pro-Russian disinformation. Three other sites would also be impacted.
“If these measures are taken against Russian media, against Russian journalists, then – despite the fact that Western correspondents do not like this – we will also be forced to take retaliatory measures,” said Zakharova.
“Our response will be quick and very painful for Westerners,” concluded Zakharova.
