Russia has cut off electricity exports to Finland

LAST UPDATE: 12:14

Electricity exports from Russia to Finland were halted overnight on Saturday following a statement from a Russian supplier, an official from the Finnish power grid told AFP.

The company responsible for the sale of Russian electricity in Finland, RAO Nordic, announced yesterday its intention to stop its deliveries at midnight, citing overdue debts, while Finland is preparing to announce its candidacy. NATO.

It should be noted that Russia provides 10% of the electricity consumed by Finland.

Relations between the two countries are being tested after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Finland’s intention to apply for NATO membership. The Finnish government has said in Moscow that it is ready to respond, if necessary, to any Russian pressure or retaliation.

Responding to the Kremlin’s threats, the Finnish Foreign Ministry told Newsweek that Finland “is a sovereign state and makes independent decisions on its security and defense.”

“Finland is aware of the various challenges involved in the NATO accession process and is prepared for a variety of hybrid threats, cyber threats and military means of pressure,” he said.

In a statement today, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grusko said that Moscow had no hostile intentions towards Finland and Sweden and that it saw no “real” reasons for the two countries to join the NATO alliance.
