Russia: Putin’s key ally moves to Russian enclave of Kaliningrad

One of President Vladimir Putin’s key allies arrived in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad today to discuss national security amid a dispute with Lithuania, a NATO member that has banned the passage of EU-sanctioned goods into Russian territory.

Nikolai Patrushev, the powerful secretary of Russia’s Security Council, will chair a security meeting in Kaliningrad, the state-run RIA news agency reported.

According to the RIA, his trip, which includes a debate on transport, was planned before Vilnius banned the passage of EU-sanctioned goods through Lithuanian territory to and from the enclave, citing European sanctions rules.

Kaliningrad, formerly known as Koenigsberg, the capital of East Prussia, was occupied by the Red Army in April 1945 and joined the Soviet Union after World War II. It is located between two NATO member states, Poland and Lithuania.

Lithuania has said that banning the passage of products subject to sanctions through its territory is simply the application of European sanctions, which include broader measures aimed at punishing Putin for invading Ukraine.
