Russia To Develop Nuclear Tsunami Torpedo

Poseidon is the god of the sea and the oceans in Greek mythology. But it would also be the name of a major Russian armaments project. To meet the ambitions of Vladimir Poutine, who wishes to make Russia an international military power, a “super weapon” is being developed. According to several experts, quoted by CNN, it would be a nuclear torpedo capable of sneaking into the seabed, bypassing the coastal defenses of potential enemies and causing radioactive tsunamis.

Poseidon 2M39 – name of this nuclear torpedo – would release a warhead of several megatons, capable of wiping out entire sections of the coast under attack and making it uninhabitable for a very long time, CNN still reports.

A “negotiating card” for Russia’s military future

International experts, especially in the United States, have seriously studied the threat. Initially, in 2015, the famous torpedo was only a plan intended to scare. But the development of this “super weapon” ended up accelerating.

Vladimir Putin has put pressure on his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the Poseidon 2M39 project could enter the testing phase in the coming months. Submarines designed to carry the stealth weapon have even already been tested according to Russian media. For Katarzyna Zysk, professor at the Norwegian Defense Research Institute, the nuclear torpedo is actually a kind of negotiating card for Russia, which attaches more and more importance to the Arctic territories.

Serious concern for the environment

“This is a project that will be used to scare, as a negotiating card in the future, perhaps in arms control,” Katarzyna Zysk told CNN. But for a project to be scary, it must be perceived as “credible”. “It seems to be real. ”

Nuclear tests also pose a serious threat to the environment. “We are environmentally concerned,” said Andreas Stensønes, head of Norwegian intelligence. “It’s not just a theory. We have had serious accidents in recent years, ”he said, referring to the Nyonoksa crash in August 2019, attributed to the alleged explosion of a Burevestnik cruise missile.
