Russia has plans to offset possible US sanctions and minimize the effects on its economy, the Kremlin said on Wednesday, urging the United States not to “create conditions for escalation of tensions” in Europe.
Washington and NATO have so far refused to provide Moscow with guarantees that the North Atlantic Alliance will not expand further east and will not develop offensive weapons in Ukraine. Russia has deployed tens of thousands of troops along its border with Ukraine, but denies any plans to invade the latter.
The United States has said it will impose heavy sanctions on Russia in the event of a new invasion of Ukraine after 2014.
The spokesman for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peshkov, said Washington’s behavior was “unpredictable” and that Moscow was preparing to adequately address the impact of any US action.
At the moment, he concluded, according to Reuters, there are no plans for a second round of Russia-US talks on the guarantees that Moscow is asking for from the West.
