Russia will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev said on Friday.
Zaitsev told reporters that Russia’s use of nuclear weapons – a risk Western officials have publicly discussed – does not apply to what Moscow refers to as its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
CIA Director William Burns said on April 14 that, given the setbacks suffered by Russia in the conflict, “none of us can ignore the threat posed by a potential use of low-yield or tactical nuclear weapons.”
The Russian army carried out military exercises on Wednesday (5), where it simulated the firing of missiles in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, between Poland and Lithuania.
In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian forces carried out single and multiple strikes against targets that simulated missile system launch zones, protected infrastructure, equipment and command posts of a fictitious enemy.
