Russia’s nuclear frigate and submarine practice using high-precision weapons in the Atlantic Ocean on their way to Cuba, says Russian Defense Ministry.
According to Russian state media TASS, the crew of the frigate and nuclear submarine practice using high-precision weapons through computer simulation against naval targets, designating enemy ships located at a distance of more than 600 km.
“The heterogeneous tactical naval strike group of the Northern Fleet, consisting of the multipurpose nuclear submarine project 885M Kazan and the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov, began to conduct exercises on the use of high-precision missiles in the Atlantic Ocean,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said, according to Russian state media TASS.
Last week, the Cuban government said for the first time that a Russian Navy fleet would visit the island in the coming days as part of “historically friendly relations.”
A statement from the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba was published by the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 6.
According to Cuban authorities, “between June 12 and 17, 2024, a naval detachment of the Russian Federation, consisting of four ships, will make an official visit to the port of Havana: the frigate ‘Gorshkov’, the nuclear submarine ‘Kazan’, the oil tanker ‘Pashin’ and the rescue tug ‘Nikolai Chiker’”.
Cuban citizens will be able to visit the Russian frigate
Cubans will be allowed to visit the Russian frigate “Gorshkov” after the scheduled arrival, on Wednesday (12), of a convoy of ships sent by Russia to the island, a Russian diplomatic source told CNN .
Three Russian ships and a nuclear-powered submarine will make a five-day official visit to the island, a demonstration of Russian strength just 145km from Florida, in the United States.
Episode takes place amid growing tensions between the United States and Russia due to the war in Ukraine. There will be no shortage of celebrations regarding the visit of Russian ships to Havana, sources told CNN .
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Cuban Armed Forces, upon arrival, the Russians will fire a 21-gun salute.
Cubans will respond with ceremonial cannon fire from an 18th-century colonial fort built by the Spanish to protect the port of Havana.
According to a Russian diplomatic source, Russia’s ambassador in Havana will preside over a welcoming ceremony for the four ships: a frigate, a rescue tug, a fuel tanker and a nuclear-powered submarine.
The Russian diplomat told CNN that from Thursday (13) “the general public” in Cuba will be able to visit the frigate Almirante Gorshkov for four hours a day, for three days.
This is the first in a new series of high-tech Russian naval vessels. Military analysts believe Gorshkov is capable of long-range missions, anti-submarine warfare and carrying surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, among other weapons systems.
