With indifference and irony Moscow welcomed the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrant against the Russian president Vladimir Putinaccusing him of being responsible for war crimes allegedly committed in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has said it does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Moscow considers the very questions raised by the ICC “outrageous and unacceptable” and that any rulings by the court are “null and void” in relation to Russia.
Asked if Putin is now afraid to travel to countries under the jurisdiction of the ICC, Peskov replied: “I have nothing to add on this matter. That’s all we want to say.”
Zakharova: These decisions have no importance for our country
The representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova emphasized that the arrest warrant against Putin is “unimportant”. “The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no significance for our country, including from a legal point of view”, Maria Zakharova said on Telegram. “Russia is not a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and bears no obligations under it,” he added.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev compared the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Putin to paper.
“The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. I don’t need to explain where this paper should be used,” Medvedev wrote in English on Twitter, accompanying his post with a toilet paper icon.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for two individuals in connection with the situation in Ukraine: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Maria Alekseevna Lvova-Belova, the Russian presidential commissioner for children’s rights in Russia, the ICC said in a statement.
Putin “is held responsible for the war crime of the illegal deportation of a population (of children) and the illegal transfer of a population of (children) from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation,” the Court added.
Reacting, Lvova-Belova said: “it is great that the international community appreciated the work to help the children of our country”, reported the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Lvova-Belova said last month that she “adopted” a child from the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which is now under Russian control.
