In the first quarter of 2022, the market share of hybrid electric vehicles increased, representing 25.1% of total passenger car sales in the European Union. In the first quarter of 2021 the percentage was 20.9%.
Overall registrations of new, electrically charged vehicles also increased during the first three months of the year. Battery-powered electric vehicles almost doubled their market share, compared to the same period last year – now accounting for 10% of total sales – surpassing plug-in hybrids, which account for 8.9% of the EU market. Diesel and petrol vehicles, on the other hand, continued to lose market share. However, traditional fossil fuel car registrations still dominate the market, with a combined share of 52.8%.
From January to March 2022, diesel car registrations across the EU continued their downward trajectory, recording a sharp decline (-33.2%), reaching 378,009 units. As a result, the market share of diesel cars shrank by 5.3 percentage points compared to the first quarter of last year. All EU markets recorded significant losses, including the big four: France (-44.1%), Italy (-39.2%), Spain (-30.8%) and Germany (-20.2%).
Similarly, the market share of petrol cars decreased significantly during the same period – from 40.8% to 36.0%. Despite this decline, gasoline-powered cars remained the most popular in volume (808,039 units).
In the first quarter of 2022, sales of battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) in the EU increased by 53.4%, reaching a total of 224,145 cars. Many EU markets recorded triple-digit percentage gains, with Romania recording the strongest growth (+ 408.0%). Of the four largest markets in the region, Spain recorded the largest increase (+ 110.3%), followed by France (+ 42.7%) and Germany (+ 29.3%). Italy was the only EU market to see a drop in BEV sales (-14.9%).
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) registrations fell by 5.3% across the European Union in the first quarter of the year. Nevertheless, PHEVs continue to expand their overall market share due to declining sales of petrol and diesel cars. PHEV performance differed in the four key markets in the region: Germany and France fell (-13.2% and -6.1% respectively), while Spain and Italy recorded steady growth (+ 46.3% and +18 , 9% respectively).
With 563,030 car sales from January to March, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) were the most common type of fuel after petrol in volume in the EU, up 5.3%. With the exception of Italy (-6.3%), all major markets contributed to the positive performance in the region. Sales of NGV vehicles in the EU continued their downward trend, recording a new double-digit decline (-56.0%), as many markets recorded a decline. In contrast, LPG vehicles increased significantly (+ 48.6%), accounting for 67,717 units registered in the EU. This increase is mainly due to double-digit or even three-digit percentage gains in all four key markets: Germany (+287.7 %), France (+ 76.6%), Spain (+ 41.5%) and Italy (+ 17.3%).
Battery-powered electric vehicles have almost doubled their market share compared to the same period last year – now accounting for 10% of total car sales in the EU, according to ACEA. New car fuel types: electric with 10.0% battery, 25.1% hybrid and 36.0% petrol market share in the first quarter of 2022.
