By showing the highest volume in a month in the last two years in December, the vehicle market practically repeated the result of the previous year in the final balance of 2022. Among passenger cars, light utility vehicles, trucks and buses, 2.1 million units were sold in the country, which represents a slight drop of 0.7% compared to 2021. The survey was released this Thursday (5) by Fenabrave, the association of automobile dealerships.
Below expectations at the beginning of the year, when automakers and dealers forecast growth between 4.6% and 8.5%, the performance shows that the sector remains at more than 600,000 vehicles far from the pre-pandemic level. In 2019, vehicle sales in Brazil totaled 2.79 million units.
The shortage of electronic components in the world, leading to production stoppages and, consequently, limited supply at dealerships, especially in the first half, prevented a better result for the year.
But with the improvement in the supply of parts in recent months, automakers were able to produce with fewer interruptions, allowing the market to show in the last photo of 2022 the highest number of vehicles sold in a month since December 2020 (244 thousand). 216,900 units were sold last month, up 4.8% compared to the same period in 2021 and 6.3% compared to November.
Contributed to this growth the rush of transporters before the change in truck prices due to the tightening, at the turn of the year, of emission limits, which required a technological update of diesel engines. Truck sales, a total of 12,100 units last month, rose 21.4% against November and 0.8% compared to December 2021.
In the passenger car and light utility segment, such as pickups and vans, December sales were 4.5% higher than in the same period of 2021. Compared to November, there was an increase of 5.3%.
Although more expensive and restricted credit affects retail sales, the industry’s largest volumes still find an outlet in orders from fleet customers – especially rental companies, which formed long waiting lists during the period of greatest supply restriction.
