The former head of FTX has agreed to stop using Signal and other encrypted messaging apps. This is a prerequisite for his release on bail.
“Respondent will not be required to use any encrypted calling or messaging applications, including but not limited to Signal. Respondent is allowed to make voice calls, FaceTime calls, Zoom audio and video calls, and use iMessage, SMS text messages, email, and Facebook messenger.”
writes Defense attorney Mark Cohen writes in a letter to the court.
Sam Bankman-Fried also pledged not to contact former employees of FTX and Alameda Research.
Prosecutors are trying to limit Bankman-Fried’s contact while he is on bail, as they fear possible attempts to influence the testimony of potential witnesses.
In late January, the US Department of Justice pointed to the fact that Bankman-Fried contacted FTX employees. Among them is FTX.US Legal Counsel Ryne Miller. Authorities say the former FTX CEO was trying to influence a key witness in the case.
In December, U.S. Attorney’s Office indicted Bankman-Fried on eight felony charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodities and securities fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and campaign finance violations. Former head of FTX pleads not guilty. Two weeks after prosecutors filed charges, Bankman-Fried was released on $250 million bail.
