Sanremo 2021: «ibuprofen sex», Aiello sings the strange relationship confirmed by a study

35 years old, originally from Cosenza, Antonio Aiello, in art simply Aiello, is the author of the most daring verses of the Sanremo Festival edition 2021. «Now it’s a sex-centric song. A confession that gravitates around this sex, often toxic, at times liberating, at others curative, even if with me it was not enough. In being absent or exaggerated, canonical or extreme, however, it is a crucial thought in everyone’s life, “he said in an interview published in Vanity Fair.

A text in which the Calabrian singer-songwriter also makes explicit reference to ibuprofen, a drug belonging to the “Fans” category, painkillers commonly prescribed for toothache, which would have an unexpected side effect on sexual performance:  “That night you and me / ibuprofen sex / 13 hours in a bed / celebrating my saint“.

But can taking ibuprofen really affect male libido? The answer comes from the urologist Nicola Macchione who with a post on his Instagram profile cites a study on the side effects of ibuprofen associated with the sexual sphere, on genetically predisposed subjects.

«The answer to“ these amazing benefits ”due to ibuprofen comes precisely from science. In fact, in a recent publication on the “Journal of International Oral Health“(2014) the researchers report a” case report “of a young Saudi who like @_aiello__ experienced a rare side effect of ibuprofen,” writes the doctor in the post. «Colleagues have in fact documented an important man in this young man “Increased libido associated with prolonged and continuous erections” two hours after taking 600 mg of ibuprofen. Such an effect it was also repeated the day after the second administration of the drug».

NSAIDs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are the most commonly used for pain control in dentistry. Side effects include general gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disturbances, impaired renal function and effects on blood pressure, liver damage and platelet inhibition, which can lead to increased bleeding. However, as reported in the study in question “This case report describes an unusual side effect, in a 26-year-old Saudi male, of increased libido and erectile function resulting from the use of ibuprofen for pain control after restorative treatment. Medical and laboratory tests have failed to identify a link between this rare side effect and the underlying conditions or possibly related etiology“.

In short: a case without a clear explanation, but – from a scientific point of view – certainly a very intriguing challenge.
