Santa Catarina registers snow in November for the first time; see images

The month of November starts with Frost in much of the country. The alert is from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), which points out that the cold front should extend until Friday (4).

This Tuesday (2), the state of Santa Catarina recorded snow for the first time in November since the beginning of the assessments in the 1980s. The climatic event was recorded in Morro da Igreja, in the mountains of Santa Catarina. In the city of São Joaquim, the freezing rain phenomenon occurred, characterized by the melting and freezing of snow upon reaching the surface.

According to Inmet, negative temperatures were recorded in the southern region of the country. The forecast is for temperatures to remain low, with the possibility of frost in the region and in the south of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Check out the lowest temperatures recorded until 8 am this Wednesday at Inmet stations:

  • Bom Jardim da Serra – Morro da Igreja (SC): -1.2°C
  • São Joaquim (SC): -0.3°C
  • General Carneiro (PR): 0.2°C
  • São José dos Ausentes (RS): 0.3°C

Cold front drops temperatures

The passage of a large and intense cold front through the country leaves many areas of instability over most areas of the Southeast, Northeast, North and part of the Midwest of the country.

The phenomenon that advanced over Brazil is now between Bahia, Tocantins, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Heavy clouds grow in these states, but there is still a large amount of cloud cover and rain from this cold front spread over other areas of the Northeast, the North region, part of the Center-West and Southeast of Brazil.

Areas of instability associated with this cold front still cause rain in the coastal area between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The intense mass of cold air of polar origin that accompanies the cold front causes exceptionally low temperatures for November in the South, Southeast and Center-West states, in Acre, in Rondônia and in the South of Amazonas.

Cold records for November were observed in areas of the South, Midwest, North of the country and also over Argentina. Cold air persists over the country until the end of this week.
