The city hall of São Paulo confirmed, this Monday (11), that there will be no street carnival in the capital this month. Carnival groups claimed the party in April, when the samba school parades take place in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro – the February event was postponed due to the epidemiological scenario caused by the Ômicron variant.
However, the authorities said they are looking for an alternative to which the street blocks can organize the parades later this year, provided there is time for the logistical organization of the street parades.
“The willingness of the municipal management, which defends cultural and democratic manifestations, is committed to finding a consensual date with time to plan the event and, thus, guarantee the security and infrastructure necessary for the revelers and the entire population of the city” , said the city hall.
The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), said this Sunday (10) he is considering holding the capital’s street carnival between May and June.
THE CNN Brazil Nunes stated that there was no objection to the party, but “concern with time for organization”. “Not exactly in June, it could be the end of May, for example [a data para realização do Carnaval de rua]. We only propose a time to be able to organize,” he said.
On Friday (8), a meeting between the organizers of the street Carnival blocks and the city hall ended without an agreement.
“The holding of events of the blocks, cords, bands and other manifestations of Carnival, must be previously authorized by Organs competent bodies by a specific act that will contain information about organizers, time, places and duration periods”, said the city hall.
“Decree 49,969/2008, which regulates the issuance of authorization permits for public and temporary events, establishes that this document must be officially requested at least 30 (thirty) days before the date of the event”, he added.
