Schieble: Wrong comparisons with Weimar

Federal Parliament Speaker Wolfgang Schieble defended the curfew in the evening in areas with a high number of coronavirus cases as proportional to the pandemic situation and a temporary measure. Therefore, the comparisons with the Weimar Republic are wrong in his view.

“A look abroad shows that all the countries that have brought the number of cases under control have resorted at various stages to spending cuts,” he said in an interview published today in the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel.

Seibel rejected the criticism leveled at the federal government, the executive branch, that it bypasses parliament, the legislature, on major issues without having the right to intervene. “I think the comparisons with Weimar, made by some people, are completely wrong.” added the Christian Democrat (CDU) politician.

“The law on protection against infections is limited in time. And in the future, the federal government will need the approval of the federal parliament (Bundestag) and the upper house (Bundesrat), where the 16 states are represented, to take enlarged action. There can be no question of self-authorization. Emergency brake law to deal with the pandemic is (however) required in the current circumstances“, Stressed Seibel.
