President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, participated this Thursday (19) in a meeting with presidents of universities and federal institutes, at the Planalto Palace, in Brasília.
After the meeting, Santana announced measures that will be a priority for the portfolio, such as budget recovery, readjustment of scholarships, dropout of university students, student assistance, resumption of works, evaluation of vacancies and the autonomy of institutions.
It is an agenda that ranges from the budgetary recovery of universities and passes through the readjustment of scholarships already authorized by the president. We are making the necessary adjustments together with Capes and CNPq, we are going to unify the adjustments to be announced by the president

The minister of education stated that the meeting marks a new phase of higher and technological education in the country. “President Lula showed respect and priority for public education in this country. Universities and federal institutes have suffered a lot in the last four years, with budget cuts, lack of scholarship readjustments, lack of dialogue”, he pointed out.
Combating dropouts by university students was one of the points addressed by the minister as a priority action. “We need to discuss a lot the evasion of our students from universities, which is very high. It justifies, according to the Higher Education Census, that 54% of students leave public and free universities. These are huge challenges,” he highlighted.
Santana updated the number of works in progress in educational institutions in the country. “We have 256 paralyzed works at universities and 76 paralyzed works at federal institutes, in addition to almost 3,700 FNDE works, ranging from kindergartens to schools,” he said.
The head of MEC highlighted the participation in a meeting with representatives of federal universities, the president of the National Association of Directors of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Andifes) and the president of the National Council of Institutions of the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education (Conif).
“We are only going to be able to rebuild this country and especially public education, which for me is the most important thing for a nation with great unity, with dialogue and respect”, said Santana.
