Ozempic is a medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes developed by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. Its main component is semaglutide, an analogue of the hormone GLP-1 that acts directly on the secretion of insulin by the pancreas, helping to regulate blood glucose levels.

Furthermore, the molecule helps to delay gastric emptying, promoting a greater feeling of satiety. Therefore, the medicine also became popular as a weight loss method. This popularity is reflected in interest in searches over time, according to Google Trends. See the graph below:

After all, does natural Ozempic exist?

Given the high popularity of Ozempic — and its cost — many people sought natural alternatives to the medicine, such as Psyllium (soluble fiber obtained from the shell of the plant’s seeds Pantago ovata). According to Google Trends, searches for the ingredient have increased by over 800% in the last 12 months.

According to experts interviewed by CNN although Psyllium has properties that lead to satiety and improve intestinal regularity, there is no robust scientific evidence that proves its direct effectiveness in weight loss.

“The term ‘Ozempic Natural’ is a form of misleading advertising, as there is no direct natural alternative to prescription medications like Ozempic,” says Tassiane Alvarenga, endocrinologist and metabologist at SBEM (Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology), in the article previously published in CNN .

Another supposed natural alternative that also became popular was berberine . On Google Trends, searches for this term increased by more than 850%. However, using berberine without medical supervision can cause side effects and present health risks, including possible drug interactions and poisoning and liver damage.

“You need to be careful when consuming products sold as ‘herbal medicines’, especially when shopping online”, warns Fernandes. “There are several cases of poisoning by so-called natural products whose origin is doubtful and in which the risk of contamination by fungi, bacteria and other toxic substances can occur”, says Alvarenga.
