Shells fired from Afghanistan landed in Uzbekistan

Five shells fired yesterday Tuesday from the territory of Afghanistan landed in the city of Termez (Thermis) in Uzbekistan, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

In a press release, the ministry clarified that the shells did not explode and caused no casualties. However, they caused “damage” to four houses, while the fifth fell on a football field.

The shells are believed to have been fired from the truck bed in Khairatan, a border town in the northern Afghan province of Balkh.

Images shared by Afghan journalists on social media showed the shells hidden in a cargo of vegetables.

Officials of the Taliban – who seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 – have refrained from making any public comment on the episode. However, Tashkent publicly and officials of the two countries privately noted that a joint investigation is being conducted into the incident.

Uzbekistan does not officially recognize the Taliban’s de facto government, but the two sides have built close relations. Afghanistan and Uzbekistan share a 144 km border in central Asia.

In April, several shells were fired from Balkh province against Uzbek territory. The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility. Both Kabul and Tashkent denied that such an attack took place.
