The global augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headset market grew by 92.1% in 2021 compared to 2020. In absolute terms, deliveries reached 11.2 million units. Such data are given in a new report prepared by specialists from the analytical company IDC.
Analysts concluded that the main growth occurred in the fourth quarter, during which almost half of the annual volume was shipped.
The most popular product is the Meta Quest 2 headset, accounting for 78% of the total AR/VR market. In second place is the DPVR model, which was particularly successful in Asian markets, with a 5.1% share of the global market. ByteDance Pico VR accounts for a 4.5% share, corresponding to third place. The top five also includes HTC and iQIYI.

New entrants, as well as wider adoption in the commercial sector, will further develop the market. IDC experts predict that headset shipments will grow by 46.9% in 2022. Growth will continue in double digits until 2026, when shipments of AR/VR headsets will exceed 50 million units. During the period covered by the forecast, the compound annual growth rate will be 35.1%.
