Shoigu: We will continue to develop nuclear weapons and maintain our combat readiness

Russia will continue to develop nuclear weapons and in particular the trio of ballistic missiles, submarines and strategic bombers, because these weapons are the main safeguard for its sovereignty, the Minister of Defense announced on Tuesday (10/1) Sergei Shoigu.

“We will continue to develop the nuclear triad and maintain its combat readiness, since the nuclear shield was and remains the main guarantee of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state,” he said.

We will also continue to increase the combat capabilities of the aerospace forces – both in terms of the work of fighters and bombers in areas where modern anti-aircraft defense systems are in operation, and in terms of improving unmanned aerial vehicles,” said the Russian Defense Minister, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

The Kremlin appointed Alexander Lapin as the new head of the army

The Kremlin has appointed General Alexander Lapin as head of the army, the TASS news agency reported today, despite criticism over his performance in Ukraine.

Lapin, a former commander of Russia’s Central Military District, came under heavy fire from allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russian forces were driven out of the eastern Ukrainian city of Liman.

His appointment followed a series of sweeping changes in Russia’s military leadership during the 11 months that war in Ukraine.

After the withdrawal of Russian forces from Liman, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and Wagner mercenary founder Yevgeny Prigozhin strongly criticized Lapin.

Kadyrov had declared that he should be stripped of all his medals and sent to the front to fight in order to wash away his shame in blood.
