Silveira creates situation room and puts pressure on Aneel after blackout in SP

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, announced the creation of a situation room and sent a letter to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), demanding speed from the distributor Enel in restoring electricity in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

The measure comes after a new blackout that left 2.6 million consumers without electricity, 2.1 million at least in eight neighborhoods in greater SP due to rain and strong winds that began on Friday night (11).

AEnel reported that, of the total, 1.45 million customers remained without power this Saturday afternoon (20).

The MME also criticized Aneel’s performance, pointing out flaws in Enel’s inspection, which has shown “recurrent inefficiency” in several concession areas. The ministry emphasizes that there is no forecast for renewing the distributor’s concession and criticized the lack of adequate investigation by the regulatory agency.

The ministry also recalled that a decree was issued with more rigorous criteria for evaluating the performance of concessionaires, aiming to guarantee the quality of service and increase investments in the sector.

Earlier, Aneel had already said that it will summon Enel to present justifications for the blackout and propose an “adaptation” in its distribution service.

The proposal will be analyzed by the agency’s collegial board, and, if the distributor does not offer a satisfactory solution, a process may be initiated to shorten the concession with the MME – which will last until 2028.

THE CNN contacted Enel about the case and is awaiting a response.
