Singapore-Coronavirus: Government loosens social distancing measures from Monday

The Singapore government announced today that it will ease its social distancing measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, as there has been a stabilization of the number of cases in the last month.

As of Monday, restrictions on socializing and dining at restaurants will be eased with the limit on the number of people who can meet increased to five vaccinated from two so far, ministers said in a press conference.

According to them, the numbers regarding the new coronavirus epidemic and the situation in the hospitals have stabilized and greatly improved.

“We are now moving towards living with COVID-19,” said Gan Kim Jong-un, Minister of Commerce and Industry. “I know that many or some would prefer to open faster, but we have to do it very carefully and gradually.”

“This means that we will relax some measures, we will observe, we will control and we will ensure that the situation is still under control and stable before we proceed to further relaxation,” he noted.

The daily number of cases of the new coronavirus in Singapore has dropped below 3,000 on average. About 85% of its population of 5.45 million have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The number of new cases in a 24-hour period decreased to 1,734 yesterday, Friday, from the record of 5,324 recorded at the end of October.

“The weekly rate of transmission in the community has remained stable at around 0.8 to 1.0 this week,” the health ministry said in a statement.
