Six Brazilians are on the list of the 100 best chefs in the world in 2023 according to The Best Chef Awards . The seventh edition of the award took place on Monday night (20) in a ceremony in the Mexican city of Mérida, in the state of Yucatán.
Among Brazilians, Alex Atala was the best placed: ahead of the Group SUN , the chef took 17th place in the ranking. Then comes Manu Buffara chef of Manu , in Curitiba, which appeared in 19th position. Last year, she was in 48th place, in addition to being elected the best chef in Latin America by Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Alberto Landgraf who pilots the Oteque a restaurant in Rio de Janeiro focusing on vegetables, seafood and fish, ranked 40th among the 100 best chefs in the world.
The Bahians Lisiane Arouca It is Fabrício Lemos duo behind Origin , a pioneering house in putting Salvador on the radar of important international awards, came in 74th place. It is worth remembering that the restaurant has just been ranked 76th among the 100 best in Latin America by Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Finally, Helena Rizzo name behind the celebrated Maní in São Paulo, appeared in 94th place on the list.
Spanish in the lead
For the third time in a row, Dabiz Muñoz was named the best chef in the world . The Madrid native commands the DiverXo a restaurant with three Michelin stars in the Spanish capital that focuses on creative and avant-garde cuisine.
Also crowned No. 1 in 2021 and 2022, the young Spanish chef has never left the top 10 since the first year of the awards, which took place in 2017.
Another Spanish came next in this year’s edition: Albert Adrià appeared as 2nd place. One of the names behind elBulli a restaurant that was a reference for a series of chefs and fans around the world in the 2000s, today it leads the Puzzle in Barcelona, awarded a Michelin star.
Who completes the podium is Ana Roš , from Slovenia. She, who was already elected the Best Female Chef in the world in 2017 by 50 Best Restaurants is the name behind the restaurant Hiša Franko in the city of Kobarid, which has three Michelin stars.

Voting
The ranking of the best chefs in the world is based on a preliminary list of 200 names, which contains a mix of 100 novice chefs and 100 chefs among the best from the last edition.
The final list is created based on secret votes from the current top 100 chefs, the other 100 candidates and also based on the choices of 180 professionals, such as journalists, critics and photographers.
The most important votes come from the chefs, who represent 70% of the final result, which, according to the awards, is a way of “honoring their peers”. Chefs, however, cannot vote for themselves.
Voting takes place online, where members receive an exclusive link to the entire process. Each person can vote for 10 chefs and the point system is from 10 to 100. Voting starts in May and participants have one month to make their choices.
